Magical Pop-up Book is a sponsored school project of “Design for the American Museum of Natural History”. It is an immersive projection mapping installation utilizing a variety of media—including a pop-up book, illustrations, projections, animations, and sound—to introduce visitors to the Olympic Rain Forest ecosystem and its typical flora, such as the Douglas fir. Each page of the book highlights one of the forest canopy layers, showcasing the unique micro-ecosystem within.
This installation is designed for volunteers who will introduce key knowledge to the field trip students. All of the contents are based on the Hall of North American Forests exhibit. Through this immersive experience and engaging storytelling, we aim to capture the attention and interest of visitors in this hall, which, while old and permanent, offers a rich educational opportunity.

Background
The project is based on The Olympic Rain Forest diorama in the Hall of North American Forests. Olympic National Park is dominated by magnificent, closely spaced evergreen coniferous trees such as Douglas fir and western red cedar. Massive trees can attain heights of 200 to 300 feet, diameters of 10 feet, and ages of 600+ years. Smaller trees and shrubs form an open undergrowth in some areas and a jungle-like tangle in others. The area is home to a diverse range of animals, too: chipmunks, bears, deer, birds, and, along the coast of the forest, whales.

AMNH Open Day
May 2024In May 2024, during the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) Open Day, my team and I reconnected with AMNH staff, facilitators, and volunteers to discuss our project idea. We presented our vision for our Magical Pop-Up Book (interactive installation) that would engage and educate visitors through this dynamic content. The AMNH team expressed interest in supporting the project, offering to volunteer and assist with exhibit space setup for our project.
Together, we brainstormed various ways they could contribute, from technical support to guiding visitors through the exhibit’s interactive elements. Their insights were invaluable in adapting our project to fit the museum environment, making it accessible and engaging for all ages. Overall, our collaboration with AMNH was highly successful, as many AMNH clients and facilitators showed
their interest in our project and provided meaningful feedback.
